Dear Composers,

The 2008 Boston GuitarFest has announced a Composition Competition in conjunction with the upcoming festival, with an entry deadline of June 8. The following information is relayed from the competition page of the festival website.

Composition Competition


The 2008 Boston GuitarFest Competitions will run concurrently with the festival. The competitions are open to all registrered master class participants, but it is also possible to register for the competitions alone.

Works for Solo Guitar

All works should be submitted by June 8, 2008

Eligibility

  • The competition is open to all composers with no age limitation or nationality.

Prizes

  • The top three prizes will be published by the highly acclaimed publishing house Clear Note Publications in the USA.

  • The first prize will be performed in Boston GuitarFest 2009 and will receive a cash prize of $400 and free tuition for Boston GuitarFest 2009.

Required Pieces

  • A work for solo guitar (no more than 15 minutes)

  • No published, publicly performed, or award-winning compositions should be submitted

  • Works must be composed for the six-stringed classical guitar

Instrumentation

  • Works need to be composed for the six-stringed classical guitar.

Scores

  • Judges will look for idiosyncratic writing for the instrument, originality, form, playability and musical imagination. Scores should be professionally typeset (e.g., Finale, Sibelius) or legibly handwritten.

Adjudication

  • Prize winners will be announced on the last day of the festival. Judges have the right to award no first prize. The judges' decisions are final.

Application and Fees

  • There is NO FEE for submitting ONE work.
  • A $50 fee must accompany EACH ADDITIONAL submitted work (no limit to the number of additional works). Ex., One submitted work is $0, two works cost $50, three works cost $100, etc). Checks should be made out to Northeastern University.

  • Submission of works could be done by regular mail or by email

  • Email submissions should be in PDF format along with the electronic submission form Payment can be sent by mail. If available, a recording of the submitted work may also be e-mailed as an MP3 audio file.

  • Submission by regular mail should include one bound copy of the score, submission form and payment. If available, a recording of the submitted work may also be included on an audio CD.

  • Care should be taken such that the real name of the composer only appears on the first page of the submitted score. GuitarFest staff will take measures to withhold the real name of the composer, and will provide judges with a number for each submission.

  • The completed submission form is Independent of the Boston GuitarFest registration.
  • Winning compositions will be announced during Boston GuitarFest 2008 and here on the website.
  • No works will be returned (please do not send originals)

Deadline

  • All works should be submitted by June 8, 2008
