The fall concert season is beginning with a bang. This week we're proud to welcome the Ditson Festival of Contemporary Music: four days of cutting-edge concerts by several of Boston's mainstay professional new-music ensembles, including the world premieres of our 2008 Festival Commissions - new works by composers Julie Rohwein, Dalit Warshaw, and Andy Vores, commissioned by the American Composers Forum New England with funding from the Argosy Foundation Contemporary Music Fund and the Thomas R McMullin and Ruth R McMullin Fund.

2008 Boston GuitarFest - Composition Competition

Dear Composers,

The 2008 Boston GuitarFest has announced a Composition Competition in conjunction with the upcoming festival, with an entry deadline of June 8. The following information is relayed from the competition page of the festival website.

Composition Competition

The 2008 Boston GuitarFest Competitions will run concurrently with the festival. The competitions are open to all registrered master class participants, but it is also possible to register for the competitions alone.

Works for Solo Guitar

(An application form in PDF format can be downloaded from http://www.bostonguitarfest.org/2008/4_compcompetition.html.)

All works should be submitted by June 8, 2008

Eligibility

The competition is open to all composers with no age limitation or nationality.

Prizes

The top three prizes will be published by the highly acclaimed publishing house Clear Note Publications in the USA.
The first prize will be performed in Boston GuitarFest 2009 and will receive a cash prize of $400 and free tuition for Boston GuitarFest 2009.

Required Pieces

A work for solo guitar (no more than 15 minutes)
No published, publicly performed, or award-winning compositions should be submitted
Works must be composed for the six-stringed classical guitar

Instrumentation

Works need to be composed for the six-stringed classical guitar.

Scores

Judges will look for idiosyncratic writing for the instrument, originality, form, playability and musical imagination. Scores should be professionally typeset (e.g., Finale, Sibelius) or legibly handwritten.

Adjudication

Prize winners will be announced on the last day of the festival. Judges have the right to award no first prize. The judges' decisions are final.

Application and Fees

There is NO FEE for submitting ONE work.
A $50 fee must accompany EACH ADDITIONAL submitted work (no limit to the number of additional works). Ex., One submitted work is $0, two works cost $50, three works cost $100, etc). Checks should be made out to Northeastern University.

Email submissions should be in PDF format along with the electronic submission form Payment can be sent by mail. If available, a recording of the submitted work may also be e-mailed as an MP3 audio file.
Submission by regular mail should include one bound copy of the score, submission form and payment. If available, a recording of the submitted work may also be included on an audio CD.
Care should be taken such that the real name of the composer only appears on the first page of the submitted score. GuitarFest staff will take measures to withhold the real name of the composer, and will provide judges with a number for each submission.
The completed submission form is Independent of the Boston GuitarFest registration.
Winning compositions will be announced during Boston GuitarFest 2008 and here on the website.
No works will be returned (please do not send originals)

Deadline

All works should be submitted by June 8, 2008

The American Composers Forum New England
announces a new project in our COMPOSER RESIDENCY PROGRAM

to commission new works to be premiered at the

Ditson Festival of New Music
in Boston, September 18-21, 2008

Synopsis:

Organized and directed by Gil Rose, Artistic Director of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), the Ditson Festival of New Music will be presented over four consecutive days in September 2008 in the acclaimed new performance venue of the Institute of Contemporary Art on the Boston waterfront. BMOP, Boston Musica Viva, and several other mainstay professional new-music ensembles of the Boston area will participate, presenting the premiere performances of three ACFNE-commissioned works on the festival program. This commissioning opportunity is made possible by generous grants from the Argosy Foundation Contemporary Music Fund and the Thomas R McMullin and Ruth R McMullin Fund, and is open to all composers resident in the six states of New England. Su bmissions are due April 18, 2008.

Composer Benefits

• Commission -- $4,000 for commission and copying costs.
• Premiere performance during the Ditson Festival of New Music in Boston in September 2008.
• Professional recording of the live performance for unlimited non-commercial use.

Composer Responsibilities

• Write a chamber-ensemble composition for instrumental resources and duration to be determined in consultation with the Festival Artistic Director and the music director of each collaborating ensemble.
• Provide legible, performance-ready scores and parts in a timely manner.
• Maintain communication with the ensemble music director and performers.
• Speak to community groups and/or pre-concert audiences as requested by the music director.
• Be present at rehearsals and performance of the composition.
• Provide progress reports and a final report to ACFNE.

Selection Procedure

Three composers will be selected for chamber-ensemble commissions. ACFNE will administer the submission process and final selections will be made by the music directors of participating ensembles, including Richard Pittman of Boston Music Viva, in consultation with Festival Artistic Director Gil Rose of BMOP.

Eligibility

Open to all composers residing in the six states of New England: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Selected composers must become members of the American Composers Forum New England.

• Receipt deadline: April 18, 2008

Application Checklist:

Contact Information � Please provide your name, email address, telephone number and mailing address.

Scores � Submit scores of three recent works that best demonstrate your artistry and craftsmanship. Include at least one work for instrumental forces large enough to require a conductor.

Recordings � Include recordings of the same three works, on one CD, with clearly marked separate tracks for each piece or movement. If you do not have recorded performances of your works, you may use MIDI realizations or you may rely solely on your scores, but we strongly recommend submitting recordings if possible.

Artistic Résumé and/or Short Biography - (one page maximum).

List of Recent Works � Include title, instrumentation, duration, names of the performers or ensemble who premiered the work, and the date of the first performance.

References � List two individuals, with their contact information, who can attest to your ability to work in a collaborative setting and to complete the commission in a timely and professional manner.

The American Composers Forum New England
announces a new project in our COMPOSER RESIDENCY PROGRAM

to commission new works to be premiered at the

Ditson Festival of New Music
in Boston in September 2008

Synopsis:

Organized and directed by Gil Rose, Artistic Director of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), the Ditson Festival of New Music will be presented over five consecutive days in September 2008 in the acclaimed new performance venue of the Institute of Contemporary Art on the Boston waterfront. BMOP, Boston Musica Viva, and several other mainstay professional new-music ensembles of the Boston area will participate, presenting the premiere performances of three ACFNE-commissioned works on the festival program. This commissioning opportunity is made possible by generous grants from the Argosy Foundation Contemporary Music Fund and the Thomas R McMullin and Ruth R McMullin Fund, and is open to all composers resident in the six states of New England. Submissions are due April 18, 2008.

Selection Procedure

Three composers will be selected for chamber-ensemble commissions. ACFNE will administer the submission process and convene a panel of knowledgeable composers and performers of contemporary music to choose a group of finalists. Final selections will be made by the music directors of participating ensembles, including Richard Pittman of Boston Music Viva, in consultation with Festival Artistic Director Gil Rose of BMOP.

• Receipt deadline: April 18, 2008

Application Checklist:

Contact Information � Please provide your name, email address, telephone number and mailing address.

Scores � Submit scores of three recent works that best demonstrate your artistry and craftsmanship. Include at least one work for instrumental forces large enough to require a conductor.

Artistic Résumé and/or Short Biography - (one page maximum).

List of Recent Works � Include title, instrumentation, duration, names of the performers or ensemble who premiered the work, and the date of the first performance.

Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope � (if you wish to have your materials returned.)
