Intermezzo: The New England Chamber Opera Series was born
out of a vision to produce contemporary chamber operas and bring new and exciting works to the
musical life in New England. Chamber opera merges the musical and dramatic flavor of grand
opera with the immediacy of art song, performed on a smaller, more intimate scale. Our focus is
on performing contemporary 20th and 21st century chamber works, particularly by American composers,
and sung in English. Intermezzo is pursuing a path to bring some of the area's most exciting
singers, composers, and directors together to produce classic, rarely performed works, and new
commissions to the stage. To date, we have commissioned 4 new works, been invited to perform at
the Kennedy Center, and have been guest artists at the Hackmatack Playhouse, the Opera House in
Boothbay Harbor, and the Center for the Arts in Natick.

A Question of Love by Charles Shadle: An Intermezzo commission
(September, 2004) based on an original libretto by Michael Ouellette, places
the action on the coast of Maine in 1946. Carter Winslow, an established painter,
has taken in a talented protégé at the urging of his brother. His struggle
between his protégé’s talent and deep-seeded sexual conflict is at the center
of this piece. Each character has a vested interest in the choice that Carter makes.
Also on the program is Leonard Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti.
