Performing Groups
New music programming and interest has been on the increase in
recent years. Every few weeks we will
acknowledge and encourage this trend by calling attention to groups in the area
that present music by living composers through performance, commissions,
competitions, and/or community education and outreach.

The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP)
is one of the few professional orchestras in the United States dedicated exclusively
to music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Founded in 1996 by
Artistic Director Gil Rose, BMOP's mission is to illuminate the connections that exist
naturally between contemporary music and contemporary society by reuniting composers
with audiences in a shared concert experience. BMOP has presented more
than 40 concerts of contemporary orchestral music, including 30 world premieres and
16 commissioned pieces, and is a six-time winner of the ASCAP Award for Adventurous
Programming of Orchestral Music. The orchestra's commercial recordings include works
by composers Arthur Berger, Lucas Foss, Lee Hyla, Reza Vali, Eric Chasalow, George
Rochberg and Tod Machover.
