As New England's only musician-governed chamber orchestra, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra's mission is to create and perform diverse chamber orchestra programs of the highest musical quality in a climate of maximum artistic freedom, and to share this experience with a broad-based constituency.
Founded in 1978, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra has a strong track record of working with both international and local artists in programs featuring some of the best-loved classics alongside new and rarely heard works of the chamber orchestra repertoire. Led by internationally acclaimed Music Director Isaiah Jackson and Pulitzer Prize-winning Principal Guest Conductor Gunther Schuller, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra showcases 36 of Boston's finest professional freelance musicians in six Sunday afternoon concerts each year at Sanders Theatre in Cambridge. Pro Arte's commitment to the creative programming of new and rarely heard works has earned Pro Arte an American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) award.

of contemporary American composers through its new music program – Pro Auctore. Among the composers featured have been John Adams, John Harbsion, James Russell Smith, John Corigliano, Michael Gandolfi, Evan Ziporyn, Marti Epstein, Tison Street, Theodore Antoniou, and Christopher Theofanidis. The wealth of composers in the Boston area whose music does not receive the exposure it deserves, together with a strong desire to bring new and rarely heard works to the attention of our audience is what drives Pro Arte's mission to present new works as prominent features of our programs. This commitment has been widely praised by critics, composers, musicians, and the public. |
