Performing Groups

New music programming and interest has been on the increase in recent years. Every few weeks we will acknowledge and encourage this trend by calling attention to groups in the area that present music by living composers through performance, commissions, competitions, and/or community education and outreach.

Performing Group of the Month

The Chameleon Arts Ensemble brings together some of Boston’s most dynamic young artists to present an annual chamber music series at First and Second Church in Boston’s Back Bay. The series includes five concerts each year with Chameleon’s now hallmark juxtaposition of the traditional chamber music repertoire, in traditional instrumental combinations, with new works by contemporary and local composers and older music for unusual instrumental combinations. The ensemble has established a firm place in the cultural community and has distinguished itself as one of the finest and most versatile chamber ensembles in Boston. The musicians are award-winning local artists with growing national and international reputations who have appeared with orchestras and in recitals around the world. Their shared artistry ensures exciting and unforgettable performances, and the group was named “first-class new ensemble” by Richard Dyer for the Boston Globe’s Best Classical Music of 1998.

Join the Chameleons as they celebrate Russian chamber music of yesterday – the towering figures of Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky - and today. The program includes Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata and Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat Suite alongside works by two of the most important Russian composers of our time: Giya Kancheli’s Piano Quartet in L’istesso Tempo, and the US premiere of Elena Firsova’s beautiful and evocative Perpetual Return for flute, oboe, harp and string trio.
