The Cantata Singers was founded in 1964 to perform the cantatas of J.S. Bach - a body of works largely unknown at that time. Since then the group has expanded its horizons to include repertoire from the 17th century to the present day.
The Cantata Singers' dedication to serious and challenging programming won the group the 1995 ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music. Under the direction of David Hoose, in his 22nd season as Music Director, the group has commissioned and premiered seven major choral-orchestral works: John Harbison's 1987 Pulitzer Prize-winning The Flight Into Egypt, Donald Sur's Slavery Documents, Andrew Imbrie's Adam, Peter Child's Estrella, Andy Vores's World Wheel, T.J. Anderson's Slavery Documents 2, and James Primosch's Matins.
