New music programming and interest has been on the increase in recent years. Every few weeks we will acknowledge and encourage this trend by calling attention to groups in the area that present music by living composers through performance, commissions, competitions, and/or community education and outreach.

Performing Group of the Month - Boston Landmarks Orchestra

The Boston Landmarks Orchestra was founded in January 2001 to perform accessible summer concerts celebrating historical, geographical and architectural settings. By presenting exceptional music performances in significant settings, the Orchestra hopes to foster a broad appreciation of classical music while bringing together the diverse communities of the area. The first four seasons drew large crowds and favorable critical notices, as well as an award from the Boston Greenspace Alliance.

The Boston Landmarks Orchestra is committed to commissioning new works from internationally recognized composers. Held annually since 2002, Landmarks' Concerts for Children have commissioned and premiered new works for children including Make Way for Ducklings by Daniel Pinkham, The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere by Julian Wachner, and The Journey of Phillis Wheatley by Nkeiru Okoye, performed first in June 2005. Additionally, the Orchestra has commissioned pieces from Tajik composer Tolib Shahidi and Boston-based composers Thomas Oboe Lee and Patricia Van Ness. The Orchestra is committed to new music and education and the Concerts for Children have been successful in bringing important additions into the canon of children's music.

Founder and Conductor Charles Ansbacher is a resident of Cambridge, and currently serves as the Principal Guest Conductor of the Sarajevo Philharmonic, the Ala-Too Symphony Orchestra (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic) and Conductor Laureate of the Colorado Springs Symphony. He has guest conducted all over the world, including the Vienna State Opera, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Chicago Symphony Hall, and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra at the Great Hall in Moscow.
